Just moments before a trial was to begin today in Manhattan federal court, Major League Baseball has reached a deal with fans to settle an antitrust class action lawsuit over out-of-market broadcasts. Details aren’t yet known.
The case, which dates back to 2012, was sparked by sports fans who targeted the league, and Comcast and DirecTV, which own several regional sports networks. The various plaintiffs claimed that the leagues, regional sports networks and the cable and satellite companies have created monopolies over the airing of games on TV and online by dividing up territories and instituting blackouts, a violation of federal antitrust law.
In a pretrial brief filed in June, MLB had said that it planned to start offering single-team packages later this year at rates similar to what the NHL agreed to offer in its own settlement reached in a parallel case in June.
