As usual, the CW is making all of its pilot orders in bulk. Confirmed so far are Kevin Williamson’s paranormal drama and Frequency, based on the 2000 New Line feature. There will be more to follow tonight, and I hear the list includes Greg Berlanti’s Riverdale, Transylvania, Colony and hourlong comedy No Tomorrow. I will post official confirmation on those when it is available. (UPDATE: All four pilot pickups have now been confirmed, read our story here.)
Kevin Williamson’s paranormal drama script had been heating up at the CW, and it attracted top director David Nutter, who has come on board to direct. The two are executive producing the pilot, about a young woman who seeks help from a parapsychologist when she begins to experience paranormal phenomena. Lauren Wagner is a producer. The untitled project hails from Warner Bros. TV and Williamson’s Outerbanks Entertainment.
This is Williamson’s third pilot order this season, along with ABC time-travel drama Time After Time at ABC, which he also created, and Fox’s A.P.B., which he executive produces.
Frequency, from WBTV and Lin Pictures, is a reimagining of Toby Emmerich’s sci-fi thriller. In the CW version, a female police detective in 2016 discovers she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father (also a detective) who died in 1996. They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the ‘butterfly effect’ wreak havoc in the present day.
The project, originally developed at NBC last season, was written by Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver who executive produces with Emmerich, President and COO, New Line Cinema; John Rickard, and Lin Pictures’ Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz .
This is one of a number of TV remakes this development season that gave their lead character a gender change from male to female. Emmerich’s feature took place in New York in 1999 and starred Jim Caviezel as a homicide detective who strangely makes contact with his late father (Dennis Quaid) exactly 30 years in the past on the day before his death. The film grossed $68 million worldwide on a budget of $31 million.
