WGN America has slated Wednesday, March 9, for the premiere of its Underground Railroad thriller Underground. The network also dropped the first two trailers (see below) for the 10-episode series starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Aldis Hodge.
From creators and executive producers Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and EP John Legend, the series follows a courageous blacksmith (Hodge) who covertly organizes a small group of his fellow slaves and pieces together a daring plan of escape across hundreds of miles to freedom. The cast also includes Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller, Jessica de Gouw, Marc Blucas, Adina Porter, Mykelti Williamson, Amirah Vann, Johnny Ray Gill, Chris Chalk, Reed Diamond, Theodus Crane, Renwick Scott and Jussie Smollett.
Green and Pokaski executive produce alongside Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) of Weed Road Pictures and Joby Harold (King Arthur, Edge of Tomorrow), Tory Tunnell (King Arthur, Holy Rollers) of Safehouse Pictures and Legend and his Get Lifted partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius. Additionally, Get Lifted oversees all elements of the show’s music. Anthony Hemingway (The Wire, Treme) directs and serves as executive producer for the first four episodes. Underground is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Tribune Studios.
