Fun Home, an intimate, dark-hued show that won last year’s Tony Award for best musical, has recouped its $5.25 million capitalization after eight months at Circle In The Square Theatre, the producers said Sunday. With an 80 percent failure rate across all Broadway productions that often is overshadowed by such high-profile hits as Hamilton and The Lion King, recoupment is always an impressive achievement — especially after such a comparatively brief period and in one of Broadway’s smaller venues.
Like Hamilton, Fun Home originated downtown at the nonprofit Public Theater. Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir recounting her coming-of-age as an artist and lesbian, and her discovery of her beloved father’s homosexuality and suicide, the show has a book by Lisa Kron and score by Kron and Jeanine Tesori, each of whom also took home Tony Awards for their work.
Fox Theatricals’ Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson, and partner Barbara Whitman financed the move uptown to the 740-seat theater-in-the-round, which required a reconsideration of the physical staging. The relocated show continued — and continues — to enthrall audiences and generate critical support, and the show has broken box office records at Circle In The Square.

“We’re so proud Fun Home has resonated with audience members in such a profound way,” the producers said. “We hope that the success of Fun Home will inspire others to produce groundbreaking, challenging and exciting new works of musical theater on Broadway.”
