Star Wars: The Force Awakens is heading into the domestic box office stratosphere. Still, it’s good to have a perspective on how it really compares with history’s biggest mega hits, which you can see on the chart below. It shows domestic box office grosses adjusted for the inflation in ticket prices: That’s necessary to account for the changing value of a dollar. If you don’t make that adjustment, then you might think that, say, Alvin And The Chipmunks – The Squeakquel (which grossed $220M domestically since 2009) is more successful than Gone With The Wind (with a mere $199M).
When you tally the results through last weekend, Disney’s The Force Awakens sits at No. 53 on the all-time list. When it crosses $700M, it will sit at No. 21. Once it grosses more than $909M, it will be in the Top Ten. That’s an astonishing accomplishment when you consider that the totals on this list include sales from multiple releases.
