Netflix Acquires Global Rights To ‘Shadowhunters: Mortal Instruments’, Will Bow Series In January Outside U.S.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has picked up global rights, excluding the U.S., to Constantin Film’s The Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. The streaming giant will premiere the title as an original series globally a day after the U.S. broadcast on ABC Family (soon to rebrand as Freeform), with the first episode launching globally January 13. Subsequent episodes will release weekly.

Shadowhunters is the TV adaptation spinoff of Cassandra Clare’s bestselling book series The Mortal Instruments. The book previously was the basis for the 2013 feature The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, directed by Harald Zwart and starring Lily Collins. The TV series follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who discovers on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – humans born with angelic blood who protect humanity from demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped by a powerful foe from her past, Clary is thrown into a new life of demon hunting under the guidance of charming and headstrong Shadowhunter Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood). Now living in the Shadow World among warlocks, vampires, werewolves and faeries, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

Shadowhunters is exec produced by Ed Decter, Robert Kulzer, Bob Shaye, Michael Lynne, McG, Mary Viola and Michael Reisz, co-exec produced by Marjorie David and Margo Klewans, and produced by Don Carmody, Martin Moszkowicz and David Cormican. Appearing alongside McNamara (The Scorch Trials) and Sherwood (Vampire Academy) are Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario (Delivery Man) as Alec Lightwood, and Isaiah Mustafa (Kill The Boss) as Luke Garroway.
