During the week of the San Bernardino shootings, more viewers turned to NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt than any other network newscast. The NBC broadcast clocked an average of 9.821M viewers and 2.413M news-demo viewers. Holt led special hour-long live editions of NBC’s broadcast for every time zone on Wednesday, when 14 people were killed while attending a company holiday party. Holt reported and anchored from San Bernardino, CA on Thursday and Friday.
Nightly topped ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir by at least 1M viewers last week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, Nightly posted its largest single-day advantage over ABC (1.444 million) since June of ’14. The NBC broadcast also led CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley by more than 1.9 million viewers for a second straight week.
Nightly posted across-the-board growth versus the same week last season, including a 2% or 172,000 gain total viewers, 4% or 100K viewers in the news demo, and 1% or 17K among 18-49-year-old viewers.
ABC’s newscast was up versus same week last year in total viewers, but not in the news demo. Muir’s broadcast averaged 8.966M viewers and 2.114M news-demo viewers.
But CBS’s newscast added the most viewers overall among the broadcast evening newscasts, year-to-year – up 6% or 410K viewers to 7.90M. CBS closed the viewership gap with NBC by 240,000 viewers and with ABC by 280,000 viewers. Pelley’s newscast logged 1.871M news-demo viewers.
