The MPAA has a new spokesperson: Chris Ortman was just named VP of Corporate Communications, replacing Kate Bedingfield who left in August to work with Vice President Joe Biden.
The trade group also promoted Sam Newton to Deputy Director, Corporate Communications.
Ortman ran an independent strategic planning and communications consulting operation since August. Prior to that he was VP of Communications and Corporate Affairs at CreativeFuture, a coalition of movie, TV and content companies opposed to digital piracy.
Earlier the Omaha, Nebraska native was a political appointee for the Obama administration serving as spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Ortman also worked with the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee and the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee.
MPAA EVP for Global Communications Laura Nichols praised Ortman’s “strong understanding of the creative industries and deep background in public policy.”
Newton has been with the MPAA since 2014. He previously worked for Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), CLS Strategies, and the Global Intellectual Property Center.
