Sony Pictures Television’s hit 1990s sitcom Mad About You is heading to the Middle Kingdom for the first local adaptation of an US comedy series.

Huaso Film/TV Digital Production, the joint-venture prodco of SPT and CCTV6’s HuaCheng Pictures, and Croton Media, say they’ve secured two deals to bring the local adaptation of SPT’s Mad About You to China. Shanghai Media Group has acquired the exclusive, first-run satellite TV rights to Xin Hun Gong Yu (local title). The series will debut in early January 2016 on Dragon TV. In a separate deal, Youku Tudou has secured the online video rights to the series, with episodes available on the streaming platform shortly after the satellite TV premiere.

Sony-PicturesTV-LOGOXin Hun Gong Yu follows a city-dwelling newlywed couple looking to sustain their marital bliss despite many hurdles including their careers, families and friends. The comedy is written by veteran Chinese screenwriter Shu Huan (Lost In Hong Kong, Lost In Thailand) and stars real-life husband and wife Li Jiahang (New Princess Pearl) and Li Sheng (New My Fair Princess).
The series is based on the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning comedy starring Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser that ran in the U.S. for seven seasons on NBC. From executive producers Danny Jacobson, Paul Reiser and Larry Charles, Mad About You was produced by In Front Productions with Nuance Productions in association with Sony Pictures TV.

Huaso has produced local versions of other SPT formats in China including health and wellness-focused talk show Dr. Oz for Zhejiang Television, game show Raid The Cage for Jiangsu Television, and competition series Dancing Nation for CCTV.

Mad About You is the latest comedy to be adapted in Asia by SPT, following Indian versions of Everybody Loves Raymond for Star Plus and I Dream Of Jeannie for SAB.
