EXCLUSIVE: Thunder Studios is aiming beyond being a facility for making movies. The LA-adjacent production studio said today that it is launching a unit focused on backing indie films and distributing them across theatrical, VOD, cable and digital platforms. The new division plans to acquire and distribute six to eight indie projects per year, domestically and/or internationally.
Thunder Studios also said it is teaming with Pipeline Motion Picture Group to represent, sell and distribute film and TV properties to foreign markets.
“Every year, there are thousands of orphan films that need good homes,” said Stephan Manpearl, Thunder Studios Head of Strategic Partnerships, who will head the new unit. “Through Thunder’s independent film division, we are able to offer all the tools and capabilities of a major studio as well as the sensibilities and new-media freshness of today’s marketplace.”
Manpearl, the Pipeling team and Andrew Troy of Troy Entertainment, who also serves as Thunder Studios’ Head of Production, will be at AFM and plan to announce Thunder Studios’ initial slate of films and other initiatives early next year.
“Thunder Studios’ mission has always been to empower filmmakers, commercial directors and digital content creators who are looking to produce the highest-quality content across multiple platforms,” CEO Rodric David said. “Thunder’s independent film division is a natural progression to further support these creators by not only providing them our facility and suite of postproduction and marketing services but also to help take their properties into the global marketplace.”
