Esmail has emerged as one of the hottest writers following the success of his USA Network drama. In his first foray into TV, Esmail wrote the project about a brooding hacker on spec, which went to pilot and series that was renewed for a second season before it had even premiered. In a rare feat, Esmail — a complete novice in TV — was entrusted with running his show by himself. He also made his TV directing debut on Mr. Robot, helming three episodes from the show’s first season. Additionally, Esmail recently signed his first overall deal, a seven-figure pact with the studio behind Mr. Robot, Universal Cable Prods.
Esmail previously was repped by ICM Partners, which helped set up Mr. Robot and did Esmail’s deals for the show as well as his overall pact. The agency also had been putting together a feature for him. I hear Esmail took multiple agency meetings, with CAA signing him in a competitive situation. He will continue to be repped by Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton and attorney Jeff Frankel.
Before venturing into TV, Esmail wrote multiple feature scripts that landed on the Black List, including Comet, which was made last year with Esmail directing.
