AMBI Pictures will finance and produce a remake of Memento, the plot-twisting pic that put a young director named Christopher Nolan on the map. This is the first project to be mined from the Exclusive Media Group film library, which Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Group acquired in September.
Nolan adapted the noir thriller from his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story and Summit released the movie in 2000. Nolan went on to direct the Dark Knight Batman trilogy and ambitious tentpoles like Inception and last year’s Interstellar.
The Exclusvie library acquisition was followed by the launch of AMBI’s $200 million film fund last week; Bacardi and Iervolino are anchor investors in the fund along with New York-based private equity firm Raven Capital Management. That led to the first greenlight for Memento. Other titles in the Exclusive vault include Begin Again, Cruel Intentions, Donnie Darko, End Of Watch, Ides of March, Hit & Run, The Mexican, Parkland and more.
AMBI also recently announced a greenlight for another remake of a film favorite: Federico Fellini’s classic film La Dolce Vita.
AMBI has emerged as a busy financing, production and sales company that can develop, package, finance, produce and sell. Among the films currently on AMBI’s slate are James Franco’s In Dubious Battle, the 3D CGI family animated film Arctic Justice: Thunder Squad, Septembers of Shiraz, This Beautiful Fantastic, the animated feature Groove Tails, and Barry Levinson’s drama The Humbling starring Al Pacino.
Said Iervolino, “Memento has been consistently ranked as one of the best films of its decade. People who’ve seen Memento 10 times still feel they need to see it one more time. This is a quality that we feel really supports and justifies a remake. The bar is set high thanks to the brilliance or Christopher Nolan, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.”
