Jennifer Lawrence has been dropped from posters for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in some Israeli towns and cities over concerns her image would offend ultra-conservative Jewish audiences. In areas such as Bnei Brak and West Jerusalem — both of which have significant, ultra-orthodox communities — the poster has been modified to remove the image of Lawrence and her bow and arrow in favor of a more generic mockingbird.
“We discovered that public posters with the image of a female are often torn down in Jerusalem, while Bnei Brak does not allow posters with female images,” a PR rep from the film’s Israeli distributor Forum Films told local reporters.
The film, the final instalment of Katniss Everdeen’s blockbuster travails against the tyrannical rule of President Snow, opened Thursday in Israel along with most of the rest of the world. In other more cosmopolitan cities such as Tel Aviv and Haifa, the poster remained as elsewhere with Lawrence’s defiance against a flaming backdrop.
