Deadline’s fifth annual The Contenders event was a sold-out show Saturday, featuring 19 studios presenting 44 films that are fighting for a berth in the ever-crowded awards landscape this season. For a second year, we hosted a portrait studio in the green room of the event, held at the Directors Guild of America. Every panelist–from Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray to Love & Mercy star Elizabeth Banks to Where To Invade Next documentarian Michael Moore–came by to have pics snapped by photographer Gabriel Goldberg. Deadline’s Pete Hammond, Mike Fleming Jr. and Dominic Patten moderated presentations that included never-before-seen footage, trailers, clips and behind-the-scenes featurettes to an audience composed of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the SAG Nomination Committee, PGA, DGA and other guilds. Sponsors included Final Draft, Dell, Allied Integrated Marketing, Screen Engine, Paradigm Talent Agency and the Honolulu Film Office.
