Universal and Working Title have tapped Kick Ass‘s Chloë Grace Moretz to star in a new live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, if the film tracks the original story, expect a far more bittersweet tale than the one that has filtered into popular culture thanks to Disney’s rosy 1989 adaptation. Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love, Actually‘s Richard Curtis is in talks to write the script.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for their Working Title, with Working Title’s Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger executive producing. Production EVP Erik Baiers and Creative Executive Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for Universal. Moretz recently wrapped production on Neighbors 2 and November Criminals.
