It’s been a while since Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson did a straight comedy – unless the horrendously underrated Pain & Gain counts, which it should. But he’s back with Central Intelligence, this time playing off his action star image opposite Kevin Hart in a story that sees The Rock as, apparently, an undercover CIA badass who drags Kevin Hart’s absolutely unwilling office drone for a mission of world shattering importance. It seems the two knew one another in high school, a gag that largely serves to make sure I will love the soundtrack with my whole heart. Basically, it’s a premise-reversed Ride Along combined with the 80s cult classic Real Men. The trailer has landed and you can watch it here.
From New Line, Warner Bros is distributing this in North America and Universal is handling international, and there’s clearly a lot of confidence in Hart and Johnson’s box office draw. Central Intelligence hits theaters June 17, 2016, the same day as Pixar’s Finding Dory, one week after Warcraft, and a week before Independence Day 2. Directed by We’re The Millers helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber, Central Intelligence also stars Ed Helms, Amy Ryan, Danielle Nicolet, Bobby Brown and Aaron Paul. The script is by Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen, and Peter Steinfeld.
