BAFTA has set David O Russell to deliver the prestigious David Lean Lecture. The discourse aims to inspire and inform, bringing insight into the experiences and achievements of some of the world’s most compelling filmmakers. Previous speakers include Robert Altman, Paul Greengrass, David Lynch, Lone Scherfig, Oliver Stone and Peter Weir. Russell, who along with five Oscar nominations has won two BAFTAs, will deliver his David Lean on December 19 in London.
Principal photography began today on Ricky Gervais’ David Brent: Life On The Road. The revival of the original Office character is directed, written by and stars Gervais. The feature sees a documentary crew catching up with Brent 12 years on from The Office. He’s now a travelling salesman, chasing his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a UK tour with his band, Foregone Conclusion. Shooting is taking place in and around London and Slough. The cast also includes Ben Bailey Smith, Tom Basden, Jo Hartley, Tom Bennett, Nina Sosanya and Andy Burrows. The LOTR Films production, is co-financed by eOne and BBC Films. EOne is handling sales and will release across multiple territories including the UK in August 2016.

SBS Australia has acquired local rights to crime drama The Last Panthers. The series is a joint pan-European effort from Sky and Canal Plus and stars Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim, Goran Bogdan and John Hurt. The heist drama premiered on Canal Plus in France on October 26 and simultaneously across Sky channels in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy on November 12. SBS will air it next year.
Television and commercials director Johan Renck and producer Svana Gisla (Springsteen and I, On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay Z) have partnered to form Gisla & Renck, a new London-based production entity that will focus on development of creative content for television and film in addition to advertising and music videos. The outfit’s first project is to be a ten-minute long music video for the David Bowie-penned theme song to Renck’s upcoming television series The Last Panthers. The video will see worldwide release on Thursday, November 19, and is the first television or film music made by the rock icon since the 1990s. Renck is repped by Reset in the US and 75 TV in Paris, and subsequently Gisla & Renck will be focused on other markets.
