Following the revival of HBO’s Project Greenlight, Adaptive Studios has announced Project Greenlight Digital Studios, an expansion of the brand and concept to the digital space made in partnership with Pearl Street Films and Miramax. The new operation aims to make Project Greenlight a 24/7 operation, allowing viewers and community members to participate in greenlighting projects, and creators to interact with industry representation and distribution opportunities. The new operation will provide premium content crowdsourced and curated with the online audience in mind, along with a slate of contests, original content, and promotions that will be announced in the coming months.
Project Greenlight Digital Studios is launching with its first competition, “Get the Greenlight”, a digital series contest that will provide the winning creator with $25,000 to produce an original digital series. Entrants must submit a video pitch for their idea, which will be voted on by the Project Greenlight Digital Studios community of users, and by judges selected from industry professionals including influencers from digital media and Hollywood. The contest is now accepting submissions at projectgreenlight.com.
“Get The Greenlight” will be followed in early 2016 by a digital series anthology contest, co-hosted with Issa Rae’s ColorCreative TV, with the aim of finding emerging and diverse writers. The winner will develop and produce a digital series anthology based on a theme to be selected in advance. Also slated for 2016 is a slate of original digital series made with a select group of digital filmmakers that includes AFI graduate Arkasha Stevenson, and Jahmela Biggs & Desmond Faison, who previously created the digital series First for Issa Rae’s Youtube channel.
Further, several of the finalists from the fourth season of Project Greenlight have been tapped for Project Greenlight Digital Studios. Among them are the Sorbonne siblings, who have created a series that follows an introverted gamer forced to fly drugs across the Mexican border using a drone; Adriano Valentini, who is adapting Beanie Bros, his Project Greenlight submission about an indiosyncratic group of twentysomething men; Julian Doan & Alex Hunter, who will adapt their submission, a horror comedy set in a future where intelligent zombies have become the dominant species; and Marko Slavnic, who will create a thriller inspired by 12 Angry Men. Finally, The Jungle newsletter founder Sarah “Sully” Ullman, the founder of is creating a new docu-series that examines “digital native” content on Snapchat.
Project Greenlight Digital Studios launches with a community of more than 220,000 “Greenlighters” already in place, comprised of participants in the 2014 Project Greenlight filmmaker contest. This community includes 5,000 emerging filmmakers, the 18,000 online judges who helped select the contest finalists, and a social media following currently exceeding 200,000 followers and built on the more than 500 million impressions made on Facebook and Twitter.
