After opening last month to very solid reviews at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA, the movie-based tuner — with songs by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles in her Broadway debut — will move into the Nederlander Organization-owned Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Producers Barry Weissler and Fran Weissler said this morning that previews are set to begin March 25, 2016, with opening night on April 24.
The show stars Jessie Mueller (Tony winner for Beautiful The Carole King Musical) in the title role of the show adapted from the 2007 indie film starring Adrienne Shelly, an actress who also wrote, directed and designed the movie. Shelly was murdered in 2006, before the film was released.
The book is by Jessie Nelson. Multitasking ART artistic director Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland) is staging the production.
Waitress tells the story of a luckless young woman whose gift for pie-making at a diner has made her something of a local star. An unexpected pregnancy changes her life in even more unexpected ways.
Bareilles previews “She Used To Be Mine,” an album of songs from the show, here:
Additional casting will be announced.Co-producing with the Weisslers are Norton and Elaine Herrick.
