ABC has put in development single-camera comedy Small Town Love, an adaptation of the Swedish series Ack Värmland (international title Small Town Love). Written by Trophy Wife creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, the show is about a mother and daughter who become pregnant at the same time from their deadbeat boyfriends. It chronicles how the relentlessly positive Annette and her super sarcastic daughter Fanny and their less-than-stellar baby daddies scrape by in a small working class town. ABC Studios, where Halpern and Haskins are under an overall deal, is the studio. Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment executive produces alongside Halpern and Haskins.
Ack Värmland premiered on Sweden’s TV4 this year to solid ratings and has been renewed for a second season. Here is a trailer with English subtitles.
In addition to Small Town Love, Halpern and Haskins are writing and executive producing Splitsville, a comedy project for ABC, ABC Studios and Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland. They are repped by UTA and Christie Smith. The Small Town Love format was repped by Paradigm.
