As Broad Green Pictures continues to evolve into original feature productions, the company has hired Straight Outta Compton producer Matt Alvarez to an exclusive pact that will establish him as an in-house producer. Alvarez, best known for his work at Ice Cube’s Cube Vision, is leaving Relativity Media, where he served as EVP.
Alvarez becomes the latest film exec to leave Relativity as the company tries to re-emerge from Chapter 11, and it was expected he would leave before that happened. Robbie Brenner left to join The Firm, and Tucker Tooley has announced he too will be leaving to chase other opportunities. Alvarez ran Relativity’s multi-cultural division as Ryan Kavanaugh’s company tried to create niche pictures. Relativity is now trying to bring in new executives as they regroup.
At Cube Vision, Alvarez had a hand in such hits as Friday, Barbershop, Are We There Yet?, the Ride Along franchise, All About The Benjamins and First Sunday. Alvarez started at New Line and Fine Line, where he worked films including the Jackie Chan-starrer Rumble In The Bronx and the Woody Allen-directed Deconstructing Harry.
Alvarez just gave notice. He starts Monday.
“We have long admired Matt’s movies and incredible eye for material, and we are thrilled to partner with him,” said Gabriel Hammond, CEO of Broad Green Pictures, and Daniel Hammond, the studio’s Chief Creative Officer. “Matt is a producer people love working with. We’re so excited to have him join the Broad Green family and cannot wait for him to do what he does best: make entertaining and original films for audiences everywhere.”
Said Alvarez: “Broad Green Pictures is dedicated to providing its filmmakers with hands-on support during development and production. Their collaboration with talent behind and in front of the camera shines through in the finished product. I am excited to work with the amazing team at Broad Green to continue to implement the company’s vision.”
