Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios (Aquarius), has closed an exclusive development deal with Fabrication, a new TV production company founded by Aquarius writers-executive producers Alexandra Cunningham, Sera Gamble and John McNamara. They’ve already begun work on their slate, with several projects in development, including two book adaptations and a remake of the British series The Persuaders. (See a trailer of the original series below).
The Lizard King is based on Bryan Christy’s book about the lives of reptile smugglers Michael and Ray Von Nostrand, Stinger on Becky Masterman’s book Rage Against The Dying. In addition to The Persuaders, a reboot of ITV’s 1970s classic that starred Roger Moore and Tony Curtis, the two companies are developing Hollywood period drama UnAmerican.
Laurie Lieser serves as Fabrication’s Head of Production. The company plans are not only for the three partners — all established showrunners — to create and run shows but to identify and nurture projects from other writers, producers and directors – both those with vast resumes and those with none at all.
'Snowpiercer' Producer Tomorrow Studios To Adapt Dean Koontz's Thriller 'Devoted' For Television
“We wanted to start a production company that would blend our areas of interest and experience and build an atmosphere of creative support and community for show creators and writers,” said Cunningham, Gamble and McNamara in a statement.
Fabrication’s roots began long before Cunningham, Gamble and McNamera’s work on Aquarius. Friends for many years, the three would occasionally team up in pairs. On individual projects, each would always seek the input of the other two. But it was the work the three did on Aquarius, recently renewed for a second season, and the collaboration with Tomorrow Studios that made them want to formalize the partnership.
“We are extremely excited to continue our partnership with Alexandra, Sera and John,” said Adelstein. “When Aquarius was first set up, we created a non-traditional model for our relationship with writers in an effort to foster an artist-friendly environment. We wanted to continue that approach by bringing in this powerful team to develop and produce while also attracting other outside writers to our studio.”
Tomorrow Studios is a partnership between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios, with Adelstein as CEO and Becky Clements as president. Together they executive produce ABC’s Last Man Standing and Aquarius. Adelstein also currently executive produces MTV’s Teen Wolf.
Details of the projects are below:
The Lizard King:
Sera Gamble and Alexandra Cunningham are adapting Bryan Christy’s 2008 book The Lizard King, based on the lives of reptile smugglers Michael and Ray Von Nostrand. Set in South Florida, the story delves into the unique world of the reptilian black market as the smugglers are chased down by Fish and Wildlife. Karen Rosenfelt will executive produce with Tomorrow Studios, Fabrication and David Frankel is set to direct the pilot.
Alexandra Cunningham is adapting Becky Masterman’s book Rage Against the Dying. The series will follow Brigid Quinn, a retired FBI agent who is trying to forget her past and enjoy civilian life with her husband in the Arizona desert. But when a man surfaces claiming to be a murderer she chased but could never catch, Brigid is sucked back into her old life of hunting sexual predators. Rage Against the Dying is Becky Masterman’s first book in the Brigid Quinn series.
John McNamara supervises writer David Reed (Revolution, Aquarius, Magicians) in this reboot of ITV’s 1970s classic that starred Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. Like the original, it follows two reluctant heroes, a Brit and a Yank, who are forced to work as fixers for a shadowy billionaire. Jonas Pate (Aquarius, Blood & Oil) is attached to direct.
John McNamara and Rafael Yglesias (Fearless, Aquarius) are writing this period drama, which explores a time in Hollywood’s history when people were denied work or even jailed because of their political beliefs. Exploring the same era as John McNamara’s highly anticipated feature Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston as Dalton Trumbo, UnAmerican is a sprawling epic about loyalty, betrayal, politics, sex and greed during a Cold War witch hunt under sunny California skies.
