Amy Berg’s Janis: Little Girl Blue, the Janis Joplin documentary that just screened at the Toronto Film Festival, has landed a rights deal at FilmRise. Berg wrote and directed the docu, which was produced by fellow docu-meister Alex Gibney, that digs into the iconic but troubled rock ‘n’ roll icon.
The pic will now get an awards-season theatrical release: November 27 in New York with a rollout to follow in Los Angeles and other cities plus digital and eventually home video. The docu will have its exclusive U.S. broadcast premiere next year on PBS’ American Masters series.
The deal was made with Content Media. Berg, whose most recently film was the Hollywood child sex abuse exposé An Open Secret, and Gibney produced with Jeff Jampol and Katherine LeBlond. Michael Kantor, Susan Lacy, Noah C. Haeussner, Stacey Offman and Michael Raimondi.
Janis: Little Girl Blue premiered at Venice before runs at Deauville and Toronto.
