Distribution chiefs are looking at this weekend like a case of the shingles with Halloween falling on a Saturday. But that means business is going to stink for kid pics like Goosebumps and spooky titles such as Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse.
That said, distribs expect some adults to come out on Saturday, in particular older females, who are tracking at 61% in total awareness for Weinstein Co.’s Bradley Cooper chef pic Burnt and 54% for Sandra Bullock’s political comedy Our Brand Is Crisis.
20th Century Fox’s The Martian is expected to stay in No. 1 during its fifth sesh with $10M-$11M. After generating a little over a third of its B.O. in 3D and PLF last weekend, the Ridley Scott feature — currently the director’s second-highest grosser stateside with $166.2M behind Gladiator ($187.7M) — will get some extra Tang in its ticket sales thanks to a one-week Imax run.
Weinstein Co.’s Burnt is looking at $7M-$9M in north of 2,900 locations. Among unaided awareness, the Cooper film has a 7% unaided awareness among females over 25 to Our Brand Is Crisis’ lowly 2%. The Bullock film at 2,202 locations is on course to be one of the actress’ lowest openings at between $5M-$7M, with some rivals predicting even lower doomsday figures. Among last weekend’s holdovers, Ghost Dimension and The Last Witch Hunter are bound to slide with declines of 55% or more, however, Universal/Legendary’s Steve Jobs is looking to keep its chin up, holding on to its 2,493 playdates with a second frame of $4M-$4.5M, that’s a 37% to 44% dip. Currently, the Danny Boyle film starring Michael Fassbender counts $9.82M, with a bulk of its business at upscale theaters.
Lastly, Paramount is releasing the R-rated horror comedy Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse in about 1,500 locations; the second part of the studio’s theatrical-VOD experiment after Ghost Dimension, which made $8.07M at 1,656 theaters, composed of AMC, National Amusements and Alamo Drafthouse bookings. The studio is hoping for $2M-$4M for the Christopher Landon-directed film, and it’s putting the focus on pulling in young males (at 61% under 25) for Thursday night previews and Friday showtimes.
