EXCLUSIVE: After an exhaustive talent search, Un-Real co-star Nathalie Kelley has landed the female lead opposite Alfonso Herrera in Fox’s drama pilot Urban Cowboy, a modern reimagining of the 1980 country music-fueled Paramount feature. Herrera and Kelley will be playing versions of the lead characters played by John Travolta and Debra Winger in the movie. Also cast in the pilot is The Carrie Diaries alumna Lindsey Gort.
The Latin music-flavored TV adaptation of Urban Cowboy, written and directed by Craig Brewer, follows star-crossed young lovers Kyle (Herrera) and Gaby (Kelley) as they pursue their dreams and passions through the sweat of line dancing in honky tonks, the grime of the oil refineries and the glamour of modern Texas. It’s about family legacies, starting over, finding true love and the American dream.
Gaby is the gorgeous, feisty, independent minded, bright and resourceful daughter of Marshall (Jim Belushi), the owner of Gilley’s, a super-popular Houston honky tonk. Currently studying immigration law in Dallas and recently engaged to an attorney, Gaby returns home to Houston for a brief time, stunned to learn of her father’s failing health and the past taxes owed on the business. Determined to turn things around, she is given carte blanche by her dad, who knows Gaby has what it takes to shore up the bar. In the meantime, sparks begin to fly between Gaby and hunky Kyle, a popular rodeo circuit rider who is a puppet for the drug cartel and is forced to flee his native Mexico after ticking off the wrong people. Gort plays Pam, the beautiful daughter of one of Houston’s most powerful families who captures Kyle’s attention. Also co-starring in the pilot are Bryana Salaz as Kyle’s sister and Edward James Olmos as his uncle.
Urban Cowboy comes from Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox TV, with Brewer executive producing alongside Robert Evans, who produced the movie, Sue Naegle and Chris Levinson.
Kelley had a one-season regular role on Lifetime’s summer drama series Un-Real, set behind the scenes of a dating reality show. The Peru-born, Australia-raised actress also recurred on ABC’s Body Of Proof and starred in The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift. She is repped by Stone Manners Salners, the Burstein Company and attorney Karl Austen.
Gort, who played young Samantha on the CW’s The Carrie Diaries, has been recurring on TV Land comedy Impastor. She is with Pakula/King & Associates and Sanders/Armstrong/Caserta.
