Bad times for a do-gooder abound in River, a new thriller from first time feature director Jamie M. Dagg. The film follows an American volunteer doctor in Laos who, after refusing the orders of a senior surgeon is forced to take a leave of absence. Heading to a remote island in the south of Laos, his solace is shattered after he intervenes in the sexual assault of a young Laotian woman, accidentally killing her assailant. Horrified and panicked, he flees, soon finding himself wanted not only for the murder of an Australian Senator’s son, but also for the rape of the very woman he saved. What follows is a harrowing journey through the Laotian interior that will test and transform John in profound ways. Watch the exclusive teaser above.
Making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, River stars Rossif Sutherland, Douangmany Soliphanh, Sara Botsford, and Vithaya Pansringarm. In advance of TIFF, Elevation Pictures has just acquired all Canadian rights for the film; meanwhile, XYZ Films is handling US rights sales.
