In a pre-emptive buy, Fox has given a put pilot commitment to Sugarland, a single-camera comedy from New Girl co-executive producers Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson, producer Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.
Loosely based on Fusfeld and Cuthbertson’s real-life experiences working together and the challenges that puts on their relationship, Sugarland centers on two friends who try and fail to keep work life and personal life separate while working for two difficult bosses. Fusfeld and Cuthbertson will write the script and will executive produce with Kaplan.
This marks the first foray into development Fusfeld and Cuthbertson, who are under their first overall deal at 20th TV after being pursued by multiple studios. The duo started off on American Dad! and did stints on Community and Ben And Kate before joining New Girl. They are repped by WME.
This is one of several broadcast sales for Kaplan so far this season, including genre-themed drama Monstropolis, which has a put pilot commitment at ABC, the Dana Klein comedy Bad News, also set up at ABC with penalty, and drama The Watcher with writer Alex Cary at NBC.
