Alibaba and Lionsgate are partnered on streaming, Tencent just picked up digital rights to all of the Star Wars movies and now China’s Youku Tudou is getting into bed with Paramount Pictures. Under a new content licensing deal, the Middle Kingdom entertainment and media company will bring more than 100 titles from the Paramount film library to its subscription service with select titles available via TVOD.
Consumer-driven demand for premium online services in China is growing rapidly and this deal brings with it a number of franchises that have proved very popular with the local moviegoing audience, including Transformers and Mission: Impossible. Also notably included are the Shrek movies — Shrek veteran Raman Hui helmed what is now China’s biggest movie of all time, Monster Hunt.
Youku Tudou’s SVOD service already offers films from domestic and foreign studios; this deal ups its library to 4,000 titles.
