OWN and Lionsgate are putting the final touches on megachurch drama series Greenleaf, from Craig Wright and Lionsgate TV, ahead of next month’s production start in Atlanta.
They’ve confirmed Oprah Winfrey will recur in the series that takes viewers into the unscrupulous world of the powerful Greenleaf family and their sprawling megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful. Clement Virgo (The Book Of Negroes) will direct the pilot episode.
Winfrey will play Mavis McCready, the sister of Lady Mae Greenleaf (Lynne Whitfield) and a close confidante of Grace Greenleaf (Merle Dandridge). The ensemble cast also includes Keith David, Lamman Rucker, Deborah Joy Winans, Tye White, Kim Hawthorne and Desiree Ross. Winfrey, Wright, Virgo executive produce. Greenleaf is slated to premiere in 2016.
