Showbox Corp, the Korean movie studio behind such cult titles as The Host and The Chaser, is entering into a five-year partnership with Blumhouse Productions and Ivanhoe Pictures to co-develop and produce six Korean-language genre films. Ivanhoe will fully finance the films selected for production. Showbox will oversee the titles’ production, marketing and distribution in Korea.
Showbox produced and distributed four of the 10 highest-grossing films in Korea. Blumhouse’s microbudget fare has grossed more than $1.4B worldwide, with its drama Whiplash winning three Oscars this year. Ivanhoe is a production/financing company focused on the North American and Asian markets and recently has co-produced and co-financed a slate of Asian films with Fox International Productions.
This deal extends Blumhouse and Ivanhoe’s relationship, as the two companies partnered with Phantom Films to produce local-language genre movies in India. CAA brokered the deal on behalf of Blumhouse with Brian Kornreich for Ivanhoe Pictures.
Showbox signed an exclusive agreement with China’s Huayi Brothers this year to co-produce at least six films over three years.
