Here’s the first full trailer for Barry Levinson’s pic starring Bill Murray as a washed-up — except in his mind — music manager who finds a potential career savior in an unexpected place. After he is dumped in Afghanistan by his only remaining client (Zooey Deschanel), Richie Lanz makes a discovery. Local teenager Salima Khan (Leem Lubany) has a stellar voice — “She’s the best I ever heard,” Lanz raves — and wants to be the first woman to compete on the Afghan version of American Idol. But, this being Afghanistan, “she is forbidden to sing; they will kill her and then kill us.” No problemo, thinks Lanz.
So our boy Murray teams with a hooker (Kate Hudson) who says she will leaves him “broken and speaking in tongues,” two American war profiteers (Danny McBride and Scott Caan) and an on-edge mercenary (Bruce Willis) in the quest for Afghan Star glory. Mitch Glazer wrote the pic, which Open Road Films releases October 23.
