Even when America’s Got Talent (1.4/6) takes a hit, it still delivers for NBC. Down 22% last night among adults 18-49 from its July 29 10th anniversary show, the “World’s Got Talent” version of AGT still pulled in the second-highest rating and the biggest audience of Wednesday night with 6.88 million watching. That resulted in the 9 PM debut of Mr. Robinson (1.2/4) drawing the best summer comedy debut viewership since 2007 with 4.6 million tuning in. In fact, as NBC is very proud to say today, while dipping 8% from the May 29, 2014 premiere of Undateable, the Craig Robinson-led high school music teacher show is the second-highest-rated summer comedy debut on any of the Big 4 in six years.

A second episode of Mr. Robinson at 9:30 PM saw a 17% drop from its lead-in in the demo and an 18% fall in viewers to 3.79 million. NBC’s burn-off plan for the six-episode series is to play two episodes a week for three weeks with fellow freshman The Carmichael Show to take over the slot on August 26. With Last Comic Standing (1.4/5) slipping 7% from last week, NBC won Wednesday with a 1.3/5 rating. CBS was second with a 1.2/4 but first in viewers with 5.39 million.
That CBS win was certainly delivered up via a Big Brother (2.1.8) platter. The top-rated and second-most watched-show of the night was up 17% in 18-49s to match a season high and a Wednesday summer edition high. The vet reality show also saw a 15% rise in viewers to 6.59 million to hit its second-best audience result this season after the June 24 premiere. CBS filled out its night with a special and highly emotional two-hour edition of Extant (0.8/3), which was even with its July 29 episode.
The CW was all unscripted premieres Wednesday with the 22nd-cycle premiere of America’s Next Top Model (0.4/2) and newbie A Wicked Offer (0.3/1). The former was even in the demo with its August 18, 2014 debut, while the freshman was down 40% from the premiere of Penn & Teller: Fool Us on July 30 last summer.
In that very competitive 8 PM slot, MasterChef (1.4/5) stayed reasonably steady with a 7% slip. Freshman lead-out Home Free (0.8/3) was not quite as lucky and had an 11% drop from last week. ABC’s only original of Wednesday was Celebrity Wife Swap (0.8/3), which was even with last week’s series low.
