The always-unfiltered FX Networks CEO John Landgraf gave a frank assessment of the puzzling imbalance between the ways violence and sex are treated on American television. Landgraf was asked for his take on Thursday’s comments by Ryan Murphy, co-creator of graphic series like American Horror Story and Scream Queens, that they have had Fox Standard and Practices notes on the sexual content but not the violence in Scream Queens. There are a number of FX series featuring violent content, including Kurt Sutter’s Sons Of Anarchy and upcoming The Bastard Executioner.
“We are a nation founded by Puritans,” Landgraf said bluntly today at the TCA Summer Press Tour. “In Europe, they think we’re crazy that we will show tons of violence but not a breast. We are more sensitive to sexual content than violence.” He added that there are some content limitations at FX, mostly related to language, but his goal is to get to a point that there is absolutely no creative censorship at the network.
