EXCLUSIVE: So maybe we’ll finally learn the truth about Robert Zemeckis’ stash of hoverboards. In October, Gravitas Ventures will release Back In Time, director Jason Aron’s documentary about the Back To The Future trilogy and its pop culture acolytes. Featuring interviews with Future-ites Michael J. Fox, director Zemeckis, producer Steven Spielberg, screenwriter Bob Gale and actors Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd, Back In Time chronicles the trilogy’s still-thriving fan culture as well as the making of the 1985 original – including the infamous casting of a too-serious Eric Stoltz and his replacement with Fox after five weeks of shooting.
“As fans of the trilogy and filmmakers, it was extremely important for us to have this documentary seen by as many people as possible,” said director Aron and producer Lee Leshen in a statement released exclusively to Deadline. The duo said they “knew within minutes” of meeting Gravitas founder and CEO Nolan Gallagher “that the team at Gravitas would make that dream a possibility.”
Said Gallagher: “Iconic documentaries, like a bolt of lightning, only come around so often. We are honored to be a part of the Back To The Future mythology and bringing this must-have film to the millions of fans who have loved the trilogy all these years.”
Gravitas acquired all North American rights and will release the doc October 21 in select theaters and on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray. The date is significant to Future cognoscenti: October 21, 2015. is the date that, within the BTTF II fictional timeline, Fox’s Marty McFly arrived (arrives?) from 1985.
In addition to the original topliners, the new docu also features co-stars Huey Lewis, James Tolkan and Claudia Wells, among others. It also visits a fan event in London. And yes, says Gravitas, the film will explore that hoverboard.
Director Aron served as executive producer with Louis Krubich, Akrum Sheikh and Ronald Ferguson. Adam F. Goldberg served as co-executive producer, with Leshen producing.
The deal for Back In Time was negotiated by Gallagher for Gravitas and, on behalf of the filmmakers, Josh Braun and Matt Burke from Submarine Entertainment.
