The Hollywood dream can come true, and the indie TV model can work. That is what Radar Pictures, David Arquette and New Artists Alliances have set out to prove with Truck’d Up, a single-camera comedy pilot starring Arquette and Keith Powell, financed by Radar Pictures, which produced it outside of the studio system with Arquette’s Coquette banner and New Artists Alliance.
Directed by Arquette and Gabriel Cowan of NAA, who also serve as showrunners, Truck’d Up marks one aspiring writer’s leap from a bartender to a pilot creator. It is described as a zany comedy set in the world of competitive food trucks and follows a rag tag group of misfits who attempt to get a food truck up and running but find that they need a budding chef with an out-of-the box menu concept to outsell their competitors. Production just wrapped on the pilot, co-starring Fernanda Romero and Upright Citizens Brigade alums Lilan Bowden, Brian Shortall, David Brown and Wilder Smith. The finished product, executive produced by Larry Nealy, Steven Swalding and Michael Lawrence, is expected to be taken out to networks and streaming services in 5-6 weeks.
Truck’d Up, created by actor-writers Ryan Karloff, Jon Kommes, and Ken C. Peterson, is one of those stories that inspires thousands to continue to flock to Los Angeles in search of a Hollywood break. Peterson and his college buddies came to LA eight years ago. Aside from doing several shorts and commercials, the trio mostly had held odd jobs to support themselves, with Peterson working at a bar. That is where he befriended a patron, Michael Lawrence, and went on to pitch Truck’d Up to him. Lawrence knew a producer, Rob Hickman of Headmon Productions, who in turn brought in frequent collaborator Ted Field of Radar Pictures. Radar agreed to back it if it could be produced for a reasonable price.
Lawrence also knew Arquette who knew Cowan, having just worked with him and NAA on Just Before You Go, the indie feature produced by Arquette and Courteney Cox’s Coquette, directed by Cox and co-starring Arquette. NAA came on board to produce.
Truck’d Up, marking a foray into TV for two indie feature production companies, Radar Pictures and NAA, introduces a new model in television, Cowan said. “While most independent television productions use successful television teams who are taking a pay cut to produce their independently financed productions, Radar is using successful independent filmmakers working at the kinds of budgets they are use to,” he said. “We like to make inexpensive productions as opposed to cheap productions; we like to call it being truly independent. I think going into TV will be the next step for the independent film movement.”
Radar and Headmon are currently in post production on Kick Boxer: Vengenance. Headmon, as a partner to Radar, financed the majority of the production budget. Radar also is in post-production on Under The Bed and in pre-production on Jumanji, The Hunchback, Heart Of Darkness and King Kong. Coquette is currently in production on Celebrity Name Game. New Artists Alliance is in post production on 400 Days, Chuck Hank And The San Diego Twins, Pandemic, Monsters and is currently shooting Fear, Inc.
Powell, who recently wrote and directed People We Meet, is repped by SMS Talent and Leverage Management. Arquette is repped by APA and Primary Wave.
