The NFL was flexing its preseason stuff again last night with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers besting the Cincinnati Bengals 25-11 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. While that was going on in cableland, broadcast primetime had a lot in play too – and we don’t just mean ringside. A big score, at least ratingswise, was Bachelor In Paradise (1.8/6). The ABC romancer saw a 20% jump among adults 18-49 over last week to hit a high in the demo. With a 6% bop in viewership to 5.5 million, BiP also had its best ever-total audience.
Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (0.9/3) trimmed things down to a Final 6 last night and stayed even with last week’s show.
The rest of ABC’s night was far from even with Bachelor In Paradise: After Paradise (1.1/3) up 57% from its August 17 show – a best ever result. That anti-gravity movement continued with newbie drama The Whispers (0.6/2) up 20% from the lows of the past two weeks.
NBC split the difference on Monday with a best of American Ninja Warrior (1.4/5) starting the night and Running Wild With Bear Grylls (1.0/3). Joined by James Marsden, the outdoorsman took a fall with a 29% decline from the last Running Wild original of August 10 – could have been the football and could have been the lead-in but whatever the cause of the fall, Running Wild has matched its series low in fast nationals. Of course, those numbers are all a bit of a jumble anyway because NBC carried the Bengals vs. Buccaneers game in the former’s market, so expect some adjustments in later results. As things stand right now, NBC tied with ABC to win the night among the 18-49s with a 1.2/4 rating. The Comcast-owned network took the viewership top spot with 4.522 million watching.
The CW was preempted in NYC with MLB. In very tentative ratings, Penn & Teller: Fool Us (0.6/2) and Significant Mother (0.3/1) were both up a tenth while Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.5/2) was even with last week. CBS was a full slate of encores on Monday.
