Exactly one month and two days ago, the domestic studio rankings were tight and Deadline thought it would be a fun race to follow. Universal sat in third place in market share, behind Warner Bros and Disney. Warner Bros sat atop the rankings, with 20.70% that encompassed $947.3 million spread over 18 releases. Disney was right behind, with 19.16%, with $876.8 million spread among 10 titles. Then came Universal, with 18.11% covering $828.5 over nine releases. That was before Jurassic World. And Minions. Now it’s Universal poised to earn the bragging rights to come with being the top domestic grossing studio. They’re killing it overseas, too.
Since that time, Warner Bros has fallen into third, as neither Entourage nor Magic Mike XXL showed staying power. Disney, fresh from the futuristic flop Tomorrowland, rebounded with Inside Out. But even though Ted 2 took all the stuffing out of that teddy bear franchise, Jurassic World has been a juggernaut and so has Minions. As a result, Universal has jumped far in the lead with 26.6% of the domestic market, with $1.62 billion, just from the addition of those two films. Disney has 19.57% and $1.188 billion thanks to Inside Out, while Warner Bros has fallen to third with 18.2% and $1.1 billion. Disney is about to open its latest Marvel Studios effort, Ant-Man, but that doesn’t feel like it’s going to make much of a difference. Warner Bros releases Man From U.N.C.L.E., but it is right up against Universal’s Straight Outta Compton, which seems poised for a strong domestic performance in August.
For 4th place Fox on down, it is a case of better luck next year. But can either Warner Bros or Disney catch Universal, which has had an awesome year both here and overseas? Since only two weeks of business from Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens will count in the tally, it seems highly unlikely.
