Universal Sets Record As Fastest To $5 Billion, ‘Jurassic World’ Hits $600M At Domestic B.O.

The hits just keep on coming for Universal. The studio just flew past the $5 billion mark at the global B.O., making it the fastest major studio to do so in Hollywood history. 20th Century Fox hit $5B last year, but did so toward the end of November. How this splits up: To date, Uni is the stateside marketshare leader with $1.7B with another $3.29B abroad.

More reason for Uni executives to throw extra steaks on the barbecue this weekend: Jurassic World is crossing $600M mark at the domestic B.O. today, making it the fastest film, at 36 days, to clear that benchmark. Currently, it’s the fourth highest title on the all-time domestic B.O. chart behind Avatar ($760.5M), Titanic ($658.7M) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($623.4M). Total global haul for the Steven Spielberg produced film is $1.49B worldwide. Meanwhile, Illumination Entertainment’s Minions ran past $500M at the global B.O. last night.

Other big global hits this year for Universal include Furious 7 ($1.51B), Fifty Shades of Grey ($569.7M), Pitch Perfect 2 ($280M) and Ted 2 ($127.5M).
