Made quasi-guerrilla style on Santa Monica Blvd. on iPhone(s), Sean Baker’s trans-tastic Tangerine opened via Magnolia Pictures in four New York and L.A. theaters over the weekend to a solid start. The Sundance title topped all its fellow newcomers but one in per-theater average with just over $16K. The weekend’s top average, though, was BlueSky Cinema’s Baahubali, which grossed nearly $3M in 170 theaters. Robin Williams’ final movie, Boulevard, bowed at one New York theater after being temporarily shelved following his death. The title grossed just over $7K. Sundance Selects opened doc Do I Sound Gay? at IFC Center in New York, grossing well over $11K. And A24 added a few hundred screens for the second weekend of Amy, which continued to swell theaters with fans.

Baahubali Poster NewBlueSky opened what it calls “India’s biggest motion picture” in 170 North American theaters over the weekend to a robust start. The feature grossed $2.995M, averaging a strong $17,618. Only Universal’s Minions had a higher PTA at nearly $27K. BlueSky noted that its online sales had already sold out showings for early last week.

Magnolia Pictures opened the first-ever feature shot on an iPhone, Tangerine, in several locations in New York and Los Angeles. The title grossed $64,255, averaging $16,064. Magnolia will expand the film in both markets in addition to opening more cities including Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston and San Diego. Tangerine will continue to add major markets into August. Magnolia also debuted Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot in 4 Dallas area theaters Friday. It grossed $22K, averaging $5,500.

boulevard posterStarz Digital opened Dito Montiel’s Boulevard exclusively at the Sunshine Cinema in New York. The feature had its debut at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, but producers temporarily held it from acquisition following the death of the actor/comedian. The film was then re-introduced to a mix of LGBT and mainstream film festivals this year before beginning its theatrical rollout Friday. The feature grossed just over $7K, not a huge start, though the film’s trailer release on YouTube with over 4 million views suggest it may have a more solid run ahead. Starz will add a dozen markets including the Sundance Sunset in L.A. the following week along with Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia and others. On-demand will not launch until fall or later.

Sundance Selects hit its stride with Toronto doc Do I Sound Gay?, which it bowed at IFC Center in New York. The feature grossed a solid $11,128, all the more impressive considering it was also available on-demand. Sundance Selects will open Do I Sound Gay? in major markets throughout July including a Los Angeles opening at the Sundance Sunset next weekend.

Broad Green opened its second release, 10.000Km in 11 theaters in 11 cities Friday. The feature by Carlos Marques-Marcet grossed $13,653 for an average of only $1,241, though the title was a day and date release via VOD. Broad Green will add markets in the coming weeks.

Among other openers, China Lion opened Forever Young in 14 theaters, grossing $70K ($5K average), and Vitagraph opened Tap World in three ballrooms, grossing $9,600 ($3,200 average). The Orchard, meanwhile, bowed Meet Me In Montenegro in 10 locations, grossing only $5,774 for a slight $577 PTA.

Amy PosterA24 added well over 300 cinemas for its doc Amy in its second frame. The feature grossed $1.78M in 341 theaters over the weekend, averaging a strong $5,131. The company noted today that it is “one of the biggest single weekend takes for a limited release documentary in years.” Last week Amy opened in 6 locations grossing just over $222K for a $37K PTA, the second biggest of the year following Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, which actually had a $46K average its opening weekend. Incidentally, Kino Lorber announced that it will re-release that title in theaters following its run on HBO.

Also holding well in its second weekend is The Orchard’s Sundance doc Cartel Land. The distributor added 18 runs for the film by Matthew Heineman, grossing $101,513 for a $5,075 screen average. The Orchard noted Sunday that the the film sold out several screenings at its exclusive L.A. location, the ArcLight Hollywood, and showed “solid staying power with less than a 25% drop week-over-week in its holdover theaters.” Cartel Land will bow in the remaining top 40 markets next weekend in addition to a roll out in the Southwest and smaller markets along the U.S./Mexico border.

Sony Classics added 8 runs for Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall in its second weekend. The film grossed $40,866, averaging $3,715 in 11 locations. Last weekend the film grossed $21,626 in 3 theaters, averaging $7,209.

Pureflix shed 190 locations for Faith Of Our Fathers’ second frame. The film grossed just $82,498 in 154 theaters, averaging only $536. Its two-week came is now over $882K.

In its 5th weekend, Sundance documentary winner The Wolfpack inched toward the $1 million threshold. The title grossed nearly $91K in 76 theaters over the weekend, averaging $1,197. Its cute is now $980,682.

Fox Searchlight’s Far From The Madding Crowd crossed $12M over the weekend. it grossed $90K in 98 theaters, averaging $918.
