Another blockbuster opening, another arrow in FX’s quiver. The network group has procured exclusive U.S. TV premiere rights to Minions, coming off the second-biggest domestic opening for an animated film. The Despicable Me spinoff banked $115.7 million in North America and has passed $400 million worldwide. FX Networks also picked up rights to the current pics Terminator: Genisys and Ted 2, with some creative editing likely in store for the latter.
The acquisitions for FX, FXX, FXM and the VOD platform FXNow mean the hits keep comin’ to the cable group. Last month it lassoed rights to a little film called Jurassic World, a few weeks after landing Pitch Perfect 2. FX Networks in the spring chased down Furious 7 and other hits including Kingsman: The Secret Service, Home and Taken 3. In 2014, it licensed two-thirds of all of the year’s features that grossed more than $100 million at the domestic box office.
