Fox News Channel celebrated its 54th consecutive quarter in first place among cable news networks in the news demographic. Double-digit demo growth in Monday-Friday primetime owed much to Megyn Kelly’s The Kelly File, which was the most watched cable news show for the month of June in the demo for only the second time ever. Highlighting Kelly’s June was her exclusive interview with the Duggar parents and victimized daughters.
While Kelly took the month, FNC’s Bill O’Reilly was tops for the quarter in the 25-54 age bracket. Also fueling FNC’s quarterly finish: Hannity climbed 10% in the new demo compared to same quarter last year, featuring exclusives with GOP candidates after announcing their White House aspirations.
FNC nabbed the top 6 shows of the quarter in the key ad-sales demo. CNN’s Don Lemon was that network’s biggest draw of the quarter in the demo; his CNN Tonight logged 244,000 25-54 year old viewers. CNBC’s repeat of ABC’s reality series Shark Tank beat everything on MSBNC, averaging 197,000 news-demo viewers. Rachel Maddow’s show was MSNBC’s best performer of the quarter, averaged 143,000 viewers in the bracket, though that stat is her show’s smallest quarterly tally since its debut in ’08.
CNN boasted it logged its largest quarterly lead over MSNBC in primetime in nearly 9 years. Here’s how the quarter looked:
FNC logged 974,000 viewers aged 2+ in total day – up 4% versus same quarter ’14. CNN snagged 431,000 viewers (up 26%) and MSNBC 318,000 viewers (down 5%).
In the news demo, FNC’s 186,000 viewers is a 2% drop; CNN’s 138,000 marks a 31% jump, and MSNBC’s 85,000 signals a 17% slide.
In primetime, FNC inched up 1% to 1.603 million viewers. CNN popped 22% to 560,000 viewers. MSNBC slipped 10% to 512,000 viewers.
In the news demo, FNC’s primetime 14% increase put it at 301,000 viewers. CNN’s 25% hike put it at 195,000 viewers. MSNBC’s 18% fumble left it with 130,000 viewers.
FNC climbed to No. 3 in total viewers among all cable networks during the news cycle that included a slew of White House bid announcements, and headline-grabbing shootings in various cities, including Baltimore and Charleston. FNC continued to outstrip CNN and MSNBC combined in total day and prime, behind only TBS and TNT, both of which featured NBA finals. Meanwhile, CNN ranked No. 26 and MSNBC No. 29.
