Ana Gasteyer is having a busy summer. The Saturday Night Live alum has been cast as a series regular in TBS comedy pilot The Group and has booked a recurring role opposite Maria Bamford in Netflix’s single-camera comedy Lady Dynamite.
The Group, from Greg Daniels, writer David Jenkins, Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and Warner Horizon TV, is about a support group for people who think they have been abducted by aliens. Gasteyer will play Gina Morrison, a very competent, dedicated and thorough therapist who has taken a few wrong turns in life, lost her accreditation and is now running a support group for alien abductees while also working part time at a home furnishing chain store.
Lady Dynamite, co-written by Mitch Hurwitz and South Park alumna Pam Brady, “is based on what Bamford (Maria) has accepted to be ‘her life.’ The occasionally surreal episodes, refracted across multiple periods inspired by the actor/comedian’s life, tell the story of a woman who loses – and then finds – her s**t.” Gasteyer will play Karen Grisham, a power agent in LA and a huge fan of Maria. Inviting Maria to lunch, Karen has no interest in representing her but does want to be her best friend. Gasteyer is repped by Gersh and Circle of Confusion.
