ABC initially ordered The Astronaut Wives Club straight to series, but its journey to the small screen has been perilous. The NASA-based drama that’s set to premiere June 18 has been retooled and delayed since its pickup in early 2014, You’d think all the extra time and tweaking would pay off. It doesn’t. As I say in my video review above, the 10-episode series about the women behind the men who became the first Americans in space sputters right from its launch.
Set for a summer after-burnoff, the drama from EP Stephanie Savage based on Lily Koppel’s 2013 eminently enjoyable best-seller simply doesn’t fulfill its mission.
Whereas now wrapped fellow 1960s-set drama Mad Men explored the personal lives of its characters amid the extraordinary events of the era and explored the day-to-day impact, Astronaut Wives Club is more of a timeline than a narrative – satisfied with checking off the boxes of such monumental events as the Sputnik launch and Cuban missile crisis with a lot of filler in between. Meanwhile, we don’t get to know these incredible real life people who were thrown into even more incredible events and explorations.
So, before Mission Control begins their countdown, take a look at my video review and tell us what you think. Is The Astronaut Wives Club on your radar?
