Apple won’t have Showtime to itself when the premium channel’s new standalone online service launches in early July. The CBS-owned channel says today that Roku and Sony PlayStation Vue customers will be able to subscribe to the $10.99 a month service, which will include East and West Coast feeds, plus on demand content.
That adds more than 30 million homes to the potential subscriber base if you include Roku’s 7 million customers with all of the homes that have a Sony PlayStation capable of watching Vue programming.
“Both platforms have distinct and loyal audiences and together they will build on our service and greatly expand the number of homes that will have access to the Showtime service over the Internet,” Showtime Networks CEO Matt Blank says. “This is fundamental to Showtime’s strategy of putting the choice in the hands of the consumers regarding how, when and on what unique devices they watch our programming.”
The company hasn’t given the streaming service a precise launch date, but says it will be in time for the July 12 season premieres for Ray Donovan and Masters Of Sex.
Roku users will need a Showtime app, available at the Roku Channel store. They’ll also be able to access the programming on other devices and via Showtime’s web site.
Roku Content and Services GM Steve Shannon says the addition of Showtime “speaks volumes to our shared commitment to offer consumers the best entertainment experience available.”

Sony will offer Showtime as an a la carte service on its new platform for PlayStation users. “We can’t think of a better partner with whom we can begin to extend our revolutionary television experience to a nationwide audience.” says PlayStation Vue’s Dwayne Benefield.
