EXCLUSIVE: Aside from the Spider-Man job, the hot directing job this week has been to helm Lionsgate’s Robin Hood: Origins. Lionsgate met with numerous hot helmers, but I’m hearing that they will set Otto Bathurst. He’s the filmmaker who established the modern, distinctive tone on the period UK gangster series Peaky Blinders. He’ll be directing a Robin Hood as conjured up by Joby Harold, the scribe who wrote Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur, the franchise of films that has Guy Ritchie directing Charlie Hunnam.
This one is an origins story that has been likened to The Dark Knight. Here, Robin Hood returns from fighting in The Crusades and finds that Sherwood Forest is rife with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws and they take matters into their own hands. This is a gritty take, with no felt hats. The picture is being produced by Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, and Safe House’s Harold and Tory Tunnell.
Bathurst is scheduled to direct Three Seconds, an indie that stars Luke Evans and David Oyelowo, but Lionsgate is moving fast on this one in hopes of starting production by early 2016. There is reason to be in a hurry, with rival projects at Disney, Warner Bros and Sony. Bathurst is repped by Casarotto Ramsay and WME.
