Donald Trump may not have commanded the late night attention he expected after a day of stout immigration-position defending, NBC-supports-lying-Brian-Williams-but-not-me-ing, and dayside headline grabbing. Some of the late-night shows that are dark on Fridays instead spent last night catching up on last week’s historic SCOTUS gay-marriage ruling.
That’s not to say Trump ended his day barb-less:
“Donald Trump has been running for president for just a little over a week, and he’s already in trouble — after Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about immigrants, NBC has officially canceled Celebrity Apprentice,” TBS’s Conan O’Brien said last night. “Think about it,: Donald Trump isn’t even president yet, and he’s already made America a better place.”
(Trump had said days earlier he would not do another cycle of Celebrity Apprentice, on which NBC has ordered another season, while he is running for the White House. NBC yesterday morning said it was canceling plans to broadcast the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which NBCU co-owns with Trump, and was seeking to end that business relationship because of Trump’s comments about immigrants made during his campaign-announcement speech.)
“Today, Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance against gay marriage. Trump said, ‘Marriage is between a rich guy and his much younger third wife’,” Conan continued.
He was picking up where CNN’s Jake Tapper left off Sunday when he interviewed Trump on Sunday Beltway show, State Of The Union and asked the candidate what he would say to gay couples who want to marry and point out Trump’s on his third wife. Trump, to his credit, said they’d have a good point, going on to praise all three of his wives.
Meanwhile, over on ABC, Jimmy Kimmel last night said, “NBC says they will not carry Trump’s Miss USA or Miss Universe pageants because of what he said about Mexicans, and not — they want to make this very clear — not because these pageants treat women like cattle at a state fair. It was the thing about Mexicans.”
(Kimmel’s network broadcasts the Miss America competition, which bills itself as a scholarship pageant.)
