“American Crime is really about the cascade effect that crime has on people. It’s not a procedural, it’s not an investigation, it’s really an examination of human nature.” So says Executive Producer John Ridley in a new featurette that dives into the tone of the ABC anthology series with emphasis on the original score. Music is essential to creating that tone, and here, we see an in-depth look at how composer Mark Isham collaborated with Ridley to do just that.
Of particular interest is how the pair started worked together. “I would say the most inarticulate things about what I think was going on in the scene,” Ridley says, “and somehow Mark was able to distill that, and get to the emotion.” That emotion is, if you’ve watched the show, often “unsettled, fearful, sad”, which makes sense given the content. The two then started by listening to an unnamed minimalist composer, and working from there. Fun – or if you like – unsettling stuff.
American Crime was renewed for a second season in May.
