Netflix has released first images fromWet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, its prequel series to Michael Showalter and David Wain’s cult 2001 film. While the movie took place on the last day of camp at Camp Firewood, the series takes place on the first day of camp, back in 1981. “In real life we’re 15 years older but in the show we’re playing two months younger,” Wain said. Added Showalter, “We thought it was funny that in the original we played a bunch of 30-year-olds playing teenagers. Now we’re in our 40s and our characters are even younger.” The eight-episode series premieres on July 31 only on Netflix.
Returning are all key cast members from the movie, including Elizabeth Banks, H. Jon Benjamin, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Janeane Garofalo, Nina Hellman, David Hyde Pierce, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, AD Miles, Christopher Meloni, Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Marisa Ryan, Molly Shannon and Michael Showalter, along with some new additions. Just for comparison, here are two images from the original movie:
“The magical thing about summer camp is that you can leave your persona from home and become the person you really want to be,” Showalter said.
