NBC has made it official, giving a series order to the multi-camera empty nesters comedy from the Hot In Cleveland team of Suzanne Martin and Hazy Mills, nowSuperstore - Season Pilot titled Crowded, which stars Patrick Warburton and Carrie Preston. I hear the pilot has been a favorite of Comcast brass. Also picked up is another early frontrunner in the NBC comedy race, single-camera workplace pilot Superstore, from The Office alum Justin Spitzer, which stars America Ferrera and Ben Feldman. They join newly picked up multi-camera comedy People Are Talking and straight-to-series single-camera show Telenovela starring Eva Longoria. All four series hail from NBC sibling Universal TV.

nbclogo__130422182418-150x150NBC’s comedy strategy for next season has been unclear given the network’s struggles in the genre this season and the lack of half-hour building blocks to launch new shows off of. NBC is yet to renew a comedy series with no locks and everyone on the bubble, including multi-camera Undateable, which is considered a possibility.

As for pilots, with the majority of frontrunners picked up, it is unclear whether there will be more orders, at least for now. I hear the network may be done on the comedy side for today.

Here are detailed descriptions of Crowded and Superstore:

No more sex, booze, and paying the bills naked. After 20 years of parenting, empty nesters Mike (Patrick Warburton, “Seinfeld”) and Martina (Carrie Preston, “True Blood”) are finally reclaiming their wild side. Yet when both of their two grown daughters unexpectedly move back in, and Mike’s parents scratch their plans to spend their golden years in Florida, their roost is full again. From executive producer Sean Hayes, this new (and very timely) family comedy proves that life is crazy with a full house, especially the second time around.

The cast includes Patrick Warburton, Carrie Preston, Stacy Keach, Carlease Burke, Mia Serafino and Miranda Cosgrove.

Suzanne Martin serves as writer and executive producer. Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner also executive produce. James Burrows will direct. “Crowded” is produced by Universal Television and Hazy Mills Productions.

America Ferrara (“Ugly Betty”) and Ben Feldman (“Mad Men,” “A to Z”) star in a hilarious workplace comedy (from the producer of “The Office”) about a unique family of employees at a super-sized megastore. From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.

The cast includes America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nichole Bloom and Nico Santos.

Justin Spitzer serves as writer and executive producer. David Bernad and director Ruben Fleischer also executive produce. “Superstore” is produced by Universal Television and the District.
