In a sign of its growing influence in the film sphere, Netflix will be given a prominent perch at the Cannes Film Market. Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos will sit down for an In Conversation session on May 15 within the NEXT program that’s dedicated to the future of cinema. This is Sarandos’ first official appearance at the market where he will address new distribution models and how they impact the financing and production of films. In a crossover, Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Frémaux will introduce him at the Palais. Netflix has been growing increasingly aggressive in the film space and is expected to be active on the Riviera. After launching into several new markets last year, the streaming company has over 62M members in over 50 countries. Expansion plans are eyed into 200 countries within the next two years.

Also in the market, Protagonist Pictures will launch sales on Lords Of Chaos from Swedish helmer Jonas Åkerlund and starring Rory Culkin and Caleb Landry Jones. Based on real events, it’s billed as the terrifying story of a dream-turned-nightmare for a group of teenagers who spiral out of control. Scott Free London, RSA London and VICE are producing in co-production with Chimney and Eleven Arts. The English-language pic settles on 17-year-old Euronymous who is determined to escape his traditional upbringing in 1980s Oslo. He becomes fixated on creating true ‘Norwegian Black Metal’ music with his band Mayhem and creates a phenomenon by using shocking stunts to put the band’s name on the map. But as the lines between publicity and reality start to blur, acts of arson, violence and a vicious murder shock the nation. Dennis Magnusson is co-writer with Åkerlund who is best known for his award-winning music video work with artists like Beyoncé, Madonna, Lady Gaga and U2. His feature film work includes Spun, Horsemen, and Small Apartments. Shooting on Lords Of Chaos starts in the fall.
